Donald W. Miller, Jr.

I am a physician and teach cardiac surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine.  I recognize and study the importance of natural medicine, especially for maintaining optimum health.  I also study and write about history, philosophy, book collecting, and various orthodoxies in the climate and biomedical sciences.

This site contains:

Articles I have written for LewRockwell.com and medical journals, available online, arranged by subject, along with books (and a form of brown seaweed) I recommend related to these subjects.

The PowerPoint slides with audio narration for "Iodine in Health and Civil Defense," a talk that I gave at  the 24th Annual Meeting of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness (August 6, 2006); the slides and text for "Adaptive Innovations in Medicine: Vitamin D, Iodine, and Selenium," presented at the 65th Annual Meeting of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons in Phoenix, Arizona (September 12, 2008); and the slides and text for talks given on  nuclear power and evidence-based medicine.

I dedicate this website to George Crosby.

This photograph was taken of George Crosby working in his garden 6 months after I performed open heart surgery on him.  He was 101 years old.  (For more about this remarkable man, and his effect on me, see pages 7, 75-76, 98, 165, 177, and 180 in my book Heart in Hand, which is accessible online here.)

Saying No to Vaccines: A Resource Guide for All Ages by Dr. Sherri Tenpenny (published June 16, 2008).  This book refutes the 25 most common arguments supporting vaccination and provides detailed information on vaccine exemptions for schools, healthcare, and the military.  It also has a 75-minute DVD that discusses, among other things, the HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine.

Vaccine Safety Manual for Concerned Families and Health Practitioners: Guide to Immunization Risks and Protection by Neil Miller ( published April 10, 2008 ).  It has more than 3,000 references, along with a foreword by Russell Blaylock, M.D.  This is the most comprehensive  work to date on the risks and benefits of vaccines.

Evidence-Based Medicine

The Government Grant System: Inhibitor of Truth and Innovation?  (In PDF), Journal of Information Ethics  2007;16(1, Spring 2007):59-69.  The Spring 2007 issue of this journal has six papers on government grants, including this one.

(This article is now also available on LewRockwell.com under the title "The Trouble with Government Grants," in this site's format with hyperlinks to online references and books cited.)

See Bruce Ramsey's  "Government's Funding Framework Breeds Scientific Conformity" published in the Seattle Times March 17, 2008.  He writes opinion pieces and editorials for the Seattle Times and interviewed me about this article and the "Questioning HIV/AIDS..." one.  (I suggested he also talk with Gerald Pollack, UW professor of bioengineering, which he did.)  See also his follow up article "A Scientist Writes About Innovation and the Grant System" April 30, 2008.

On Evidence, Medical and Legal.  Coauthored with Clifford Miller (no relation): Miller DW and Miller CG.  Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons 2005;10(3-Fall):70-73.

Its conclusion:  "Medicine needs to develop a better understanding of the nature of evidence and of evidential proof, by emulating law’s approach to evidence.  Law in turn needs a better understanding of the shortcomings of medicine’s approach to evidence."

Comments by reviewers: "Frankly, I consider this a landmark manuscript--it is absolutely wonderful and makes researchers look at their profession in a new light--in terms of legal implications as well as what is truly ‘scientific’…. It is absolutely a classic." And:  "On Evidence, Medical and Legal"  I think is terrific..... The authors have done a remarkable job putting it all together...... We need more sharp thinkers to help ...  against HMOs and their Madison Ave rhetoric."

My book  Heart in Hand  Copyright © 1999 by Donald W. Miller, Jr.

Heart in Hand delves into a variety of subjects--music, philosophy, religion, science, and my life as a heart surgeon.  I address bacteriology, evolutionary biology, physics, the music of Richard Wagner, and, in particular, the philosophy of Schopenhauer and Woody Allen's films.  The book focuses on sex, religion, compassion, and art--four ways, as Schopenhauer shows us, humans can peek inside the castle of ultimate reality, where the secrets of the inner nature of the world and all things in it reside. Theologians, people who study philosophy and love music, and Woody Allen fans will enjoy reading this book.  Perhaps even some scientists as well.

You can download the book from this site, chapter by chapter, or print out all six chapters together, along with illustrations that are not in the published book.

You can order hardback or paperback copies from  www.amazon.com or directly from the publisher,  www.xlibris.com, either online or by phone: 1-888-795-4274
